An Evening of Theatre
Thursday 22nd July, 6pm & 8pm

Justice - A new play by Alfred Howard

You have done nothing wrong. The police take you away and imprison you. They say you will get a fair trial, but the outcome has more to do with the skill of a lawyer than the facts of the case. The trial is a contest between barristers not a search for truth.

An untrained group of 12 people hold your life in their hands. They are supposed to take only the facts into account, but in truth, they are just as likely to be swayed by rhetoric and emotion.

This is not fiction. We call it Justice.

Sweet and Twenty by Floyd Dell

This beutiful little comedy demonstrates how simplicty in theatre can be used to great effect. Now almost lost in time, this play was originally performed by the historic Provincetown Players, New York City, in 1918.

The Provincetown Players was a group of writers and artists who, at the early part of the 20th Century, wanted to see a change in American theatre and created a company committed to producing new plays by exclusively American playwrights. Their efforts launched the careers of Eugene O'Neill and Susan Glaspell.

Floyd Dell was a best-selling author. He was a life-long poet and the author of a hit Broadway play, Little Accident (1928). His influence can be seen in the work of many 20th century American writers.

Afternoon Tea

Following the success of ‘The Benefit of Time & Seconds Out’ Northwest based Organised Chaos Productions present another piece of new writing – ‘Afternoon Tea’

What can go wrong over afternoon tea? Lots, actually!

William and Abigail are on a 'saucy' weekend away, where each others 'true colours' are appearing. Abigail is hoping for wedding bells, little does she know that it's the furthest thing from William's mind.

Whether they are discussing themselves, or most likely other people, Jean and Poppy love to gossip, put the world to rights and really just have a good old moan. While they are drinking and dunking their rich teas something sinister is happening in one of their homes and jean is about to find out who's been watching her... and it isn't the cat!

'Afternoon Tea' is written by Lindsay Kernahan

Marry Another, Katy Lied, Lisa-Marie Glover and Jinski

Katy Lied

KATY LIED, a fantastic band who BOB HARRIS and Radio 2 playlisted and raved about.
Can it really be almost a year since the unforgettable hook and insistent jangle of Katy Lied's debut single "Late Arrival" became a feature of the BBC Radio 2 airwaves, propelling the album of the same name to national attention and garnering across the board praise from audiences and critics alike?

LISA MARIE GLOVER-Lisa Marie Glover - Tea in the Sky 4/5
Reviewed by Rick Underwood - Liverpool Echo

Wow! What a voice! Lisa-Marie is something special. Really special.

Her voice effortlessly swoops from the highest to the lowest, with the honey sweet tone and an emotional quality that gently draws you under her melodious spell.
Lisa-Marie Glover is simply spectacular. She should be the one people are compared to, but if we want comparisons, she sounds a little like Joni Mitchell, a little like KD Lang, and the complex clever harmonies remind me a little of The Roches.
She is folky, bluesy, and jazzy, but most of all, she is herself, and that is pretty marvellous!
You can't help but listen closely to the thoughtful, heartfelt words of her beautifully constructed songs on 'Tea in the Sky'. There's nothing safe or wishy washy in there. She tells it how it is, with a light touch that warms and cheers, as her lovely music enchants. Particularly good are 'Somewhere by the Sea' and 'Poor Baby.'
How fortunate we are to have her right here on our doorstep!
Do yourself a huge favour, and get out to her local gigs, before she is inevitably whisked away into her life as a global superstar!

Lisa-Marie Glover is pure gold, and 'Tea in the Sky' simply shines with her special brand of magic.

JINKSI-

Steve Jinski has dipped his toes into many musical pools including acoustic roots, folk, pop, country and all those bits that sound a bit like acoustic roots, folk, pop and country, but the fact that always remains the same is his uncanny knack of coming up with nailed-on, brilliant tunes.

His new album, Hurry Home, features ex-Prefab Sprout member, Wendy Smith, on backing vocals and consists of a collection of carefully crafted and beautifully sculptured songs which delve into the heartland of acoustic roots with themes inspired by the trials and tribulations of everyday life.

MARRY ANOTHER- Prestwich based band who have made an impressive debut recently."The bass is solid and the vocals are delivered well. Harmonies are great. Track has a good chorus and hook distinct from the verse and giving the melody a good sound"

Benefit of Time and Seconds Out

North West based Organised Chaos Productions present a double bill of new writing.

"Seconds Out" is written by Helen East: Al has had his time in the limelight as a boxer and is now training the boxers of the future; he can't wait for his young protégé, Danny, to battle it out at the upcoming Commonwealth Games. Danny is enjoying the fame and adulation but has decided he doesn't want to go. Can anyone "win" in this battle of wills? Set in real time in an inner-city gym, the play asks the question how far would you go for someone you love?

"The Benefit of Time" is written by Terri-Ann Brumby: Debbie Green is dull. Debbie Green is plain. Debbie Green works in Human Resources. Donald Cruickshank her hypnotist is desperate for celebrity. Can Debbie's colourful "previous life" reshape her mundane existence? "You are currently in a dormant life. Which means you are a very old soul that has had many traumatic or extraordinary existences. That's why you're boring." A triumph over adversity story, with past life regression, royalty, personnel procedure, cunning, crime, birth, death and filth! Don't be a loser be a Tudor.

Photographs by Sue Langford
Sunday 3 - Sunday 31 January

© Sue Langford

The next work to adorn the walls of Taurus on Canal Street is a collection of photographs by Manchester-based Sue Langford, which will be displayed throughout January.
A keen amateur, Sue's work shows her love of the great outdoors and her natural eye enables her to see the opportunity in an unusual angle. The "jokey oak" - a simple image of an oddly shaped oak tree on the approach to Mam Tor near Edale - demonstrates this perfectly: "I made my way down the slope to a point where I had a clean line of horizon behind the tree. I had to lie on the floor to get it but I think the picture was worth the odd looks I got!"

Sue is showing a selection of images from 2009: Ibiza, Wales and Italy all feature; the Umbrian landscapes were taken on an olive-picking holiday with British Trust for Conservation Volunteers in November. About a metre wide, the largest landscape was taken from the olive groves at Villa Pianciani near Spoleto, but - while landscapes do feature - Sue is quite relaxed about her subject matter: she says "I very rarely go out to take a photograph. I tend to just go for a walk and take my camera with me in case I see something while I'm out." The results tend to be quite striking and often feature a stunning blue sky: if that's not something to go and look at in January, I don't know what is!

All of the images are for sale with a limited print run. To contact Sue, email her at:

A VARIETY OF WORKS IN ACRYLICS
by Ernesto Thompson.

Pegasus Sea Flight © Ernesto Thompson

Ernesto’s family were one of the first Manchester families to emigrate to Australia under the ‘£10.00 Scheme’ back in the 1950’s.  He saw first hand the emerging world of New South Wales, and so began his love of the sea. At 14 he lived a life far removed from the ones his friends were living in Reddish in Stockport.
Returning to UK in the 1959 he met and married his wife Sheila and after a short time as a signal man for British Rail he became one of the first police constables in the newly formed ‘Manchester Smithfield Market Police.’

After reaching the status of Chief Inspector for the Market Police, and after taking early retirement Ernesto, was diagnosed in 2005 with prostate cancer.
It was during his recovery that Ernesto and Sheila bought a house in Fuertaventura and Ernesto could further his love of painting . They now enjoy winters under the Canarian sun, where he spends his time on his commission work and their summers in the North West of England again completing commissions for his UK clients.

Rage

Rage is an original play by one of Manchester’s fastest rising theatre company’s who have recently scored rave reviews with their play’s ‘M’, Dog Sees God, The Breakfast Club and 3sum, this time around the company tackle the controversial subject of Campus Shootings.

The play tells the story of a group of college students who two hours before were targeted by a fellow student on campus as he went on a rampage through the halls of the college shooting his fellow classmates. Now on lockdown on the campus and with several students forced in to the same room, the students begin to try and process what just happened and ask who is to blame.
With tempers flaring and emotions running high, the finger of blame points to everything from America's gun culture, mental health, the media, violence in entertainment, but most importantly at bullying and high school and college cliques - and it's not long before the students realize that their own actions can have terrible consequences.

With Gun Crime rising everyday in the UK and especially in Manchester the play is meant as a warning that it’s only a matter of a time before something like Columbine or Virginia Tech happen in our schools unless we stand up and say Enough is Enough.

Richard Asbury : Patterns of Nature

 ©Richard Asbury

“Patterns of Nature” is the latest exhibition by Manchester-based artist Richard Asbury.

In this new series of works, Richard explores the relationships that exist between the various structures of Nature and the natural laws that bind them.

Trees feature prominently in this exhibition, for in their form lies the structure of a multitude of things; neural networks, veins and arteries, rivers and streams etc.

Throughout our bodies, the world around us, and the universe, certain patterns recur again and again.

This exhibition explores and expresses those pleasing proportions that make Nature so beautiful and harmonious.

Transfigurations

Trans Bible Characters??? You betcha!

In this one-person play, theatrical performance activist Peterson Toscano unearths transgender Bible characters, those people who do not fit in the gender binary, and who in transgressing and transcending gender, find themselves at the centre of some of the Bible's most important stories. After the interval, Peterson will share excerpts from other plays including The Re-Education of George W. Bush, Queer 101-Now I Know my gAy,B,Cs, and Doin' Time in the Homo No Mo Halfway House.

With stories from the road, new material, and always a few surprises, Peterson shares his own story of trying to 'de-gay' himself and the process he took to integrate his sexuality with all parts of his life. Meet Chad and Vlad and nutty Marvin along with Tex and Rev. Meadows and Earthel and other unforgettable character that Peterson has created.

Peterson Toscano is gay US-based theatrical performance activist and comic actor who travels internationally with original one-person shows that address transgender, bisexual, lesbian, gay and queer concerns as well as issues of race, gender, environment and faith. He tells his own story of how he tried and failed to de-gay himself in the one-person comedy "Doin' Time in the Homo No Mo Halfway House." His newest play, "Transfigurations--Transgressing Gender in the Bible" explores the stories and lives of transgender Bible characters. He has been featured in the Times, BBC World Service, the New Statesman, The New York Times, People Magazine, Logo Channel, PBS and the Tyra Banks Show.

Syd Haslam

A lifetime spent making his mark

As a boy, Syd Haslam saw drawing as an opportunity to avoid school work. He showed early talent for life drawing. Whilst serving in the Royal Navy during the Second World War, he supplied his fellow sailors with “pin-ups” for their walls but at the same time was able to capture the stark reality of war. Syd’s ability to portray the human form has stayed with him and today he regularly goes to life classes in Bolton, his home town. “Life drawing requires discipline and perseverance” is one of Syd’s sayings.

Pencils, charcoal, water colours and oils –Syd has even been known to paint on wallpaper. A packing case maker by trade and a Boltonian through and through, in addition to life drawings, Syd has given pleasure to his family and friends with paintings of local scenes, often capturing them before demolition, creating almost a historical record.

In 1966, artist L S Lowry selected Syd’s painting of Church Bank, Bolton for an exhibition at Bolton Art Gallery. The Bolton Evening News at the time referred to Syd as an “Artistic Artisan – carpentry to canvas in leisure time” Bolton Art Gallery subsequently purchased the painting

Lifelong Learning

At the age of 84 and never frightened to try new things, since retiring Syd has strived to and enjoyed increasing his range of skills in local classes and art groups. Laurette Evans, Arts Officer at Bolton University says: “I have a drawing by Syd on my office wall which is admired by everyone who sees it. This drawing is in charcoal and chalk rather than pencil and is typical of how Syd is prepared to experiment in his art work. He has a saying “Trying new ways of drawing keeps you young and I have to say he gets younger every week!”

That’s Life!

Here at Taurus, “That’s Life!” brings together a collection of Syd’s observations on the human form. The life drawings represent no more than a quick study to capture form and tone. That brevity of time contributes to his strong and clear style.

Dave’s main inspiration has always been the Lake District where he both lives and works.

Self taught, he first used a small digital camera to capture snaps of his days out walking and mountain biking in the local fells, creating a photo diary as he went along.  What started as a simple diary soon became a hobby and the hobby progressed onwards to become a part of his daily life. He is now rarely seen venturing out without a camera in tow.

When not out and about with his camera Dave can be found brewing fine ales at Hawkshead Brewery near Kendal. He claims it’s a tough job that somebody has to do it!  He has also produced most of the commercial images used by the company today.

If you would like to see more of Dave’s photographs then please do go to www.innominateimage.co.uk  and have a look around.

Dave would like to thank his son Gary and partner Nick for persuading both himself and Iain at Taurus, that an exhibition would be a good thing.
We all know who to blame :)

Frisky and Mannish

The rumours are true. They have arrived. No touching.

Following their massively popular shows at Manchester Pride 2008 and The Marbella Cafe, Frisky and Mannish will once again be gracing Manchester with their presence, performing at Taurus Bar on Wednesday 18 February.  Miss them at your own risk.

"WHITE-HOT ONES TO WATCH."
[Time Out, November 2008]

"Frisky and Mannish were simply TOO GOOD to be in this show... act alone was worth FIVE STARS... deserve to be performing in the most prestigious shows... Their comedy timing was perfect, their expressions genius... the whole audience were in THROES OF AWED HILARITY... Frisky and Mannish are a MUST-SEE, so keep your eyes peeled for them."
[Lea Mazzocchi, October 2008, www.remotegoat.co.uk]

"IT'S A REMARKABLE ACT - the highlight of the four acts covered by this review, and likely the highlight of any evening... two EXTRAORDINARILY GIFTED and ASTONISHING performers, great presence, remarkably imaginative, wholly original - and COLOSSAL FUN."
[John Park, June 2008, http://www.fringereport.com]

"London's enfants terribles of MADCAP, MASHUP CABARET."

"LONDON'S FINEST in louche cabaret... a simply awesome cabaret band - Lady Felicity Fitz-Harding and Hansel Amadeus Mannish make for a fine, fine double act."

Levi Weaver

Levi won the myspace competition about two years ago to tour with Imogen Heap out of the thousands of bands who entered (I believe about 10,000). He is a one man symphony who uses looping and electronic devices in his performance. You need to SEE him to believe it.

Gary Nock - Live This man has a voice that kisses you every which way you can be kissed and these two tracks showcase it to perfection...
"His voice picks up and runs with the emotive lyrics, it strokes your ears with calloused fingers one minute and velvet
gloves the next......" THE MAG

“I am what I am....”

Pianoke Busker Bar

What does a piano, a microphone, songbooks and a warm, inviting space need?    ...you!

You are invited to the premier of the Pianoke Busker Bar:  classier than karaoke and more dynamic than backing tracks, Pianoke gives you the opportunity to sing like a diva, with live piano accompaniment, in a safe, intimate and friendly space.

Our Pianoke team will start the evening with some tasty tunes, then the books and the microphone are over to you.  You choose what you want to sing, or just listen to, and we’ll play it for you.  During the evening, we’ll sing-along with some all-time favourites, from Vera and the War Years through to Elton and the Moulin Rouge; from musicals to classic pop; from light rock to jazz; from pure cheese to pure anthem; it’s all available for you.

We’ll be surprisingly good for you!

The Speed of Dating

Coming Soon - Booking Opens 28th July

Meet Alice; a guaranteed liability. Alice is a bisexual, single woman in a straight man's world. She finds it hard to talk to attractive people, to string a sentence together, even just to be herself.

What alice really wants is to find love, but all she gets is a string of awkward dates that send people running, screaming and possibly even crying.

Ever been on a bad date? I promise, it'll never have been quite as bad as this.

'The Speed of Dating' is a farcical guide of "how not to get laid".

Allow yourself to laugh at someone else's misfortune, because even when the ships are down, at least you're not Alice.

A play by Stephen Belber
Directed by Paul Walker
North West Regional Premiere
Presented by Northern Outlet Theatre Company

Ian Britt

*Chapman has cancelled this event and it will be headlined by Ian Britt*

Ian Britt is a well respected Singer/Songwriter from Sheffield, England

Born in Sheffield and moving on after a colourful youth & adolescence, Ian fled his roots to study music in the notoriously musical city of
Manchester, He signed to the independent label Jalapeno Records in London in 2005 while making himself a name locally as an acoustic
singer-songwriter.

A debut album was recorded in 2005 with a duo of dance/breaks producers and on release was met with a positive and encouraging reaction from national/regional press/radio. The album "One Day I" culminated in a grand and commandingly produced soulful, Trans-Atlantic sound with mature, honest, sometimes humorous lyrical writing, assured technical ability and a keen melodic pop-rock-radio sensibility.

Ian Britt is a must see for 2008. Everywhere he goes he succeeds in capturing peoples' hearts with his accessible music which he shares
with his audience as a true troubadour.

Risa Hall pre- NY gigs, Mike Dignam, a very young gifted player who is making waves. Also featuring Ian Bailey and Marwood.

Dog Sees God

when CBs dog dies of rabies, CB begins to question the existence of an afterlife. His best friend is too stoned to provide any coherent speculation, his sister has gone goth, his ex girlfriend has been sectioned, and his other fiends are too inebriated to give him any form of solace.

But by a chance reunion with his childhood friend, the target of this group's bullying offers CB a peace of mind, and sets in motion a friendship that will push teen angst to the very limits.

Whether you’re familiar with the iconic comic strip or have never seen it before, Dog Sees God is the perfect show for anyone who likes to laugh.

Gemma Parker

Peppermint Pattie 2008 © Gemma Parker

It’s that grim time of year again when we could all do with a little indulgence to cheer us up. This February sees Taurus host an exhibition of pure decadence.

Gemma Parker, Manchester’s first and only retro pin up and burlesque artist has created a series of paintings featuring a selection of ladies derrières all themed around sweeties and chocolates.

In France the phrase ‘bon bons’ is a slang term for anywhere below the waist. Here we see Parker using that term to its fullest and most fun. Each peachy behind is enhanced with ice cream colours and sugary titles. With the collection ranging from jellybeans to strawberry fondant there should be a flavour to temp anyone’s taste buds.

“POWER”
An Exhibition of work by Sue Clancy

"I am a mother and a lesbian. I have been against labels all my life, but when I listed an amount of some of the labels I have worn in my life, it came to a staggering number of 28 ! and furthermore I have used at least 7 different names..! So you could say i'm a difficult person to describe ....because I don't stay the same long enough! I am currently known as Sue Clancy, Sue Wilkes or Vidya...and my paintings are signed as such. I am living, loving and painting in Sackville St. in Manchester under those names.....but who knows for how long!"

The Power of death
"The Power of Death" by Sue Clancy

This exhibition I have called POWER because I have been fascinated by this topic for a long time and have been engaged in a power struggle with my own mother for the past 50 yrs. She died this year, the year in which I was released from that struggle and able to truly see its depth. So it seemed a very appropriate theme.

It is my hope that people will be able to connect with the themes of my work and that some people will like and understand what I am trying to convey. Ultimately that it can just be enjoyed, if only for the energy I have put into it.
