The Housing Support Service for
Older LGBT People works with anyone aged over 50 who identifies
as LGB or T. We work with people who live in all tenures so
you can be renting from the council, owner occupier or housing
association tenant etc etc. People need to have what we call
a 'housing related support need' so they may need help & support
with things like housing benefit, settling into a new home,
accessing services, problems getting repairs done, experiencing
harassment in their neighbourhood.
This particular service was established because we know that
older LGBT people are even more reluctant to access services & don't
feel confident in revealing their sexuality. The Housing Support
Worker delivering the service is from the LGBT community so
service users feel at ease discussing any issues they may have.
The LGBT Housing & Homelessness Advice Surgery was set
up in partnership with The Lesbian & Gay Foundation as
we felt there was a real need for LGBT people, of any age,
to access good housing advice in a safe environment & to
be confident that they would not be treated unfairly when disclosing
any issue relating to sexuality.
The advice surgery is run on a 'drop in' basis every Tuesday
night at the LGF building from 6-8pm and although we don't
do casework we do aim to refer people to the most appropriate
support agency. We are able to offer advice on things like
rehousing, neighbour nuisance, harassment/hate crime, domestic
violence etc. Although a Manchester City Council service we
do see people from neighbouring authorities and we try and
point them in the right direction!
